Brand Protection Solutions for Pharmaceutical Products

Tuesday, May 12, 2009

Chicago, IL- The Brand Protection Alliance (BPA) announces technology solutions for brand owners and package producers in the Pharmaceutical Industry. The healthcare and pharmaceutical industry is a highly lucrative target for counterfeiters who have been known to introduce fake, harmful ingredients posing risk to public health and safety on a global scale. Through its member companies, the BPA offers many key technology platforms key to ensuring brand protection and product authentication in pharmaceuticals.

KURZ Transfer Products has extensive experience in protecting Pharmaceutical products. Our solutions can be furnished as a single image or wallpaper pattern TRUSTSEAL® that is hot stamped onto the packaging or applied using a cold foil transfer. For protection of Pharmaceutical products a TRUSTSEAL® could be converted into a tamper evident closure tab indicating if the package were opened. It is also possible to incorporate the TRUSTSEAL® into the blister foil to provide an added level of security. Finally, due to regulatory information that must appear on Pharmaceutical packaging we have seen success by utilizing our TRUSTSEAL® in a transparent or HRI formulation.

In addition to the overt features of the TRUSTSEAL®, covert, semi-covert and forensic levels can also be built into the OVD. The use of "track and trace" technology has been very important to the Pharmaceutical industry, and KURZ has serialization available using TTR or laser ablation, that in conjunction with our online database management system can simplify that process through general and custom reporting.

Nautilus Authentic8™ Technology is a high tech graphics driven security solution being used to protect and authenticate Pharmaceutical branded products. It is used with normal prepress and printing processes to embed invisible, high resolution images into package and label design that can only be visualized using inexpensive, special frequency lenses. The feature is applied in offset, flexo, gravure and digital printing processes using standard printing inks as well as directly onto substrates (paper, blister foil and package board) using ‘nano' embossing and within plastic using injection mold process. Not only is this covert technology the most sophisticated of its type, but the clarity of imagery, created by the correct alignment of the lens with the embedded images within a design, provides for exceptional public interaction potential.

Applied DNA Sciences, Inc. (OTC Bulletin Board: APDN) a provider of DNA security solutions has two solution platforms, using DNA that occurs naturally within a product or is added as extrinsic markers that address the need for secure healthcare products.

  • Intrinsic DNA. Using its Biomaterial Genotyping™ platform, APDN has recently proved its ability to verify the origin and authenticity of naturally derived textiles such as cotton. The same approach can be used to identify a pattern of native DNA content in biological drugs and in naturally derived ingredients that are used in pharmaceuticals, personal care formulations and nutritional supplements.
  • Extrinsic DNA. An alternative approach is to designate authenticity with an extrinsic marker. APDN's SigNature® DNA markers are unique, botanically derived markers that can not be copied and due to their enormous variability, provide forensic proof of identity for brand protection. SigNature DNA may be used in packaging and labels providing DNA security ink on the printed surface, DNA-marked adhesive on the back of a label, as well as protecting the serialization or barcode that is linked to a secure database. SigNature DNA is a green, safe technology that can also be incorporated in formulations of finished-goods.

Atlantic Paper Company offers security and brand protection papers as an ideal platform from which to build a comprehensive brand protection program. These papers are sophistication-scalable, combinable with a myriad of other brand protection technologies and are cost appropriate. By themselves, security and brand protection papers provide pharmaceutical brand owners with the base layer of protection which is economical, user friendly and easily authenticated. Atla Secure C1S is a one side printable paper that contains two distinct UV-Reactive fibers for authentication purposes. Atla Secure C1S is printable via all of the primary print processes required of today's premium brands' packaging. Atla Secure is an uncoated opaque paper that contains 3 UV-Reactive fibers and elicits a reaction to oxidants such as bleach. This paper is commonly used for insert and outsert pharmaceutical applications and serves to both authenticate the product and limit the brand owner's legal liability. Atlantic Paper also provides custom solutions tailored to premium brand owner's specific needs.
